Live blog, etc…
UPDATE: WE’VE TAKEN THE LIVE BLOG DOWN. I’LL STILL BE DOING THE MATCH REPORT, AND THE BLOG WILL RESUME ONCE WE GET THIS THING DONE RIGHT.
We had some hiccups last week, but starting today, live blogging will happen for all major matches. Starting with India versus England, here.
Also, getting my feet wet again writing match reports. Been a while, and I don’t believe the amount of rust on the brain — it’s proving a lot harder than I imagined. Anyways — two done so far; will do today’s as well, and regularly once the quarters begin. Early attempts: Australia versus New Zealand; Pakistan versus Sri Lanka.
Thoughts, comments, suggestions appreciated.

Ravi Shastri gem “India will be looking to make contact with the ball as often as possible” LOL !
India Eng Tie,was a good result but the following was disturbing-MSD’s captaincy during the batting order. His field placing was also below par .
Indians getting bowled out was also criminal. Our fielding pathetic (Dravid and Laxman were kept out of the team because of fielding?Young legs supposed to field better?Even the batting strike rates were not too outstanding?)
Perhaps it was good that this match happened early and can lift India.
hii mahesh definately everything that can go wrong actually went wrong for the Indian team on this tour.Agreed that nothing clicked this time for them but rather than critising them the more fruitful discussion would be What Next? how should be your tomorrow not to discuss how was ur yesterday.MSD will have to lift this team up quickly sort out the limitations and be ready to show some character in the last test at oval. Whats ur take on this?
Prem,
Where is the match report, the link in this blog takes me to live blog but not beyond 10th over of Indin innings.
BTW, Awful bowling performance by India. I liked what Sambit Bal said on Cricinfo, “India…..did not concede more than a single off the last ball after the first five of the final over had gone for 12.”
One question, why is it so difficult to find your writeups on Yahoo?
KP
Prem,
I was looking at a sample of the comments in your blog, must be attracting a whole lot of traction. Is that something you are trying to fix, moderate the feedback?
After scoring over 320, did India want to make the match interesting by offering lot of runs by keeping a porous field placement? Luckily for them, the 3PP forced them to change the strategy.
Enjoyed your reports, missed the analyses.

Similar situation in the England – Australia ODI at Perth, but different outcome..
Extract from Cricinfo..
Can someone explain how this 2.5 metres rule work. Is it left to the Umpire to stick to his decision or can he overturn it on his own??
===============================================
3.3
Plunkett to Paine, OUT, ah, now, we have a review that could be for both caught and lbw. Paine was walking down the pitch and tried to flick the ball to leg, it’s hit him on the pad and lobbed out to cover, where the catch has been taken. So England want to know if it’s either lbw or caught, which Paul Reiffel decides against. The review shows that he was hit in line and it was hitting the stumps, with no edge suggested by Hot Spot. And despite being hit so far down the pitch – he’s out lbw!
TD Paine lbw b Plunkett 5 (16m 7b 0×4 0×6) SR: 71.42
Interesting decision, that. The technology said it was out, smashing into middle stump halfway up, but under normal circumstances a batsman would never be given out lbw when he’s that far down the pitch. Anyway, here’s Ferguson.
===============================================================
There are couple of points here on the UDRS. First the path after the ball hits the pad is decided by human hand and they are not sure if it is beyond 2.5 mts. This was why it is in the tournament rules. And the third umpire was going as per the rules. Remember in olden days, the hawk eye stopped at the point the ball hit the pads, and never showed the trend line beyond that, for this precise reason. The off field umpire just couldnt reverse the decision, and the original decision stood. If Bowden had given Bell out LBW, and if England had gone for the review, the original decision of out would have stood.
Why MSD had nothing to complain is because the original decision was ‘not out’. So if UDRS were not there, as in most Indian matches, Bell not out would have stood
That is not correct..
Based on the UDRS, final decision is left to the umpire. The umpire can reverse his original decision after he gets to hear the third umpire..
Third umpire would have told him,
a) Its not a No Ball – OK
b) It is pitching in line – Ok
c) it is hitting the stumps _ ok
d) It has hit the batsman beyond the 2.5 mts – final decision is yours
In both Bell and Paine decisions, there was one more point as well which may not be available at all times..
e) umpire on the ground could see the decision on the big screen.
Based on this the on field umpire can reverse his earlier decision and stick by it.
In the Tim Paine dismissal, the umpire (Paul Reiffel) reversed it.
In the Bell dismissal, Silly Billy stuck to his decision.
Either Billy did not know the rules properly that he can reverse his decision based on a) to d) ( in this case (e) as well) or he can see something that the entire world can see
Prem,
Just finished reading your match report, was looking for your comment on Indian fielding but did not find any. Some very obvious poor fielding errors noted.
1. Bhajji making half hearted attempt early on at mid-off off Strauss drive
2. Kohli dropping a easy slip catch in late overs off Chawla
3. Eng batsmen running two with ball in Gambhir’s hand at deep square leg boundry
4. Sachin making a mess and unable to save a boundry
KP
Having watched that incident, I guess it was a teaching moment. It told us something about each of the protagonists.
1.) ICC – As Prem has often said, what do you do with a body that has no head, no heart and no ass? The UDRS is probably the best initiative the ICC has taken in years, but they diluted the whole thing with this asininity.
2.) Billy Bowden – Prima donna as always. Nobody reacts to his antics any more, so he found another way to get in the spotlight. Keep in mind his comments when the UDRS was first introduced. In the same breath, he said that umpires get most decisions right, and that tests would end in a day if replays were used. Basically, he went to both ends of the spectrum to oppose the UDRS. Here, he saw an opportunity to dilute its usage. I suspect he always knew he would do this if given a chance.
3.) Dhoni and the Indian team – I think they did a great job of getting on with the game instead of throwing their toys out of the pram. One can only imagine what Ponting would have done in a similar situation. Bangalore would need a whole new dressing room, not just a new TV.
4.) Strauss, Bell and the England team – It was not their fault that the umpire acted like an ass. I have a lot of respect for Bell for coming out later and saying he didn’t get it either. Ponting or Smith would be out justifying Bowden.
UDRS is a good thing, but to limit to 2 is not fair, even if they are worried against abuse, after 2 it could be upto the umpire or the players can still ask for a review, and they could still be censured for excessive appealing if theyr ask for frivolous reviews. The system can be tweaked to make it effective.
I dont understand why Dhoni is shouting so much on the UDRS based on this incident. Had URDS been not there, the umpire’s decision of NOT OUT would have been applicable. It is not that a decision was reversed because of UDRS. True, Bowden should have reversed his decision, but thats the merit of URDS, not a demerit.
I dont understand why Indian players doesn’t like UDRS. Curious, I went through Cricinfo commentary of the 2008 series against Srilanka, and I do not find any terrible decision made against India because of the review system. True, Mahela used it better; but I do not see any injustice done to India by the review system.
The only reason why Indian batsmen dislikes UDRS, I think, is they play spinners with pads regularly in Tests. It is very dangerous if we have UDRS.
Exactly. I feel they still haven’t understood the system and don’t know how to use it. The pity is they don’t even want to learn how to use it. It is like my mom’s & mom-in-law’s reluctance to use ATM card.
There were several things that contributed to the dismal defence of 338 – field placements, too many 4 balls, lethargic fielding, ball coming on to bat better in lights, etc. One of the factors, in my opinion, was also mis-handling of Piyush Chawla.
He was in the side as an attacking bowler. There was no need to bring him on in the bowling powerplay (Dhoni could have also delayed the bowling powerplay by couple of overs). He didn’t flight the ball initially in his starting overs. To add that he is not a regular member. Why put your attacking option under so much pressure? That’s reducing the chances of getting wickets. Give him the comfort of spread field and let him do his trick. Bell was in discomfort initially reading him.
Later, he had to bowl the 49th over. Thats always risky for a wrist spinner. You need someone who is firing in flat at that time. Piyush chose to flight the ball and realized it little too late when he bowled flat to take Bresnan’s off stump.
Also, he was not brought up in the middle overs.
Overall, a lot of ifs and buts, but for sure lots of demoralising and doubts for the bowling unit.
Anand, I agree. Dhoni’s captaincy was too uninspiring both in Chawla’s case and in the field setting. I get a feeling that Dhoni is not able to use his attacking bowlers properly (both Srisanth and Chawla). Bhajji and Patel (as defensive bowlers) doing their job (although I dont understand why on earth Bhajji should be defensive). Zaheer is the only exception and I think thats because he gets freedom of chosing what he wants to do when he bowls.
I would rather have Zaheer as the bowling captain and let him decide on field placings for all the bowlers.
wonder what happened about the void left by Venky Prasad as the bowling coach!
But then why would BCCI care.
w.r.t Akash Chopra’s column – exactly why will you beef up your strength as MSD keeps repeating. If Sehwag, Sachin, Gambhir, Kholi, Yuraj/ Yusuf (prefer Yusuf here), MSD cannot do the job of setting or chasing what is the point? They should definitely go with 5 bowlers atleast against Ireland to try it out.
Why is it that Bhajji is a holy cow? When poor Sreesanth went for a few in a World Cup opener ( even though he did bowl some splendid deliveries in that spell ) everyone and his aunt was there to condemn him. Now Harbhajan cannot even beat the bat against Ireland on a wicket that did turn. In one of the overs, 2 balls were full on the leg stump to the left hander, 2 outside off going straight through and 2 on the stumps going straight on. For god’s sake he is a spinner. What is the point in bowling over spin when he cant turn from off to leg. And less said about Chawla the better. Long hopes, full tosses, rank short balls – it was pathetic for the second match in a row. Also, why are we carrying Nehra who is not fit for the first 3 week of the tournament? Our bowling is not upto scratch and it will be a miracle if we reach the Finals. And we cannot prepare turning tracks as some of the spinners from other teams are far better than ours. One really wishes we had taken Pragyan Ojha. And earlier we put Harbhajan to pasture, the better.
I would like if the think tank can rest Zaheer and bring in Sreesanth also drop Chawla and bring in Ashwin atleast for this Netherlands match. Also chase this time too.
How come someone like Chawla gets to play again and again while Sreesanth is banished after one match? How come Aswin has to warm the benches when Harbhajan cannot even take a wicket against Holland? There are some holy cows in our team. Dhoni said today that Chawla needs more practice as the reason for picking him against Holland. And Nehra was carried with the team for 3 weeks till he got fit (if he is ever fit). People like Dravid and VVS were shown the door because they were slow movers on the field. But the same yardstick is not applied to Nehra or Yuvraj. This must be one of the worst fielding sides ever. Then why drop Dravid or Laxman?
Atleast this time Dhoni’s response has been Harbhajan will be totally different when stronger teams come on – this means he acknowledges Bhajji is not playing well right now. That is a huge change – otherwise it might have been Bhajji is creating the pressure by containing and thats why Yuvi is getting the wickets
CSK is playing a very nice game. keeping almost all its players fresh for IPL next month. See the list below
Badrinath, Vijay, Jakati, Saha: No chance of getting selected for India. No problem.
Albie Morkel: Quiet word with SA selectors and some money? and he is not picked in SA squad
Bollinger, Bravo , Hussey: Asking them to miss world cup with Injuries. Hussey of course has rebelled and his IPL career may be in jeopardy now
Raina, Aswin: Tell Dhoni, not to pick them in playing eleven. Srikkant will support Dhoni on this
That leaves only Dhoni, Styris Du Flais actively playing . Except Dhoni, other two are in CSK to make numbers
I wonder what the instructions for Dhoni are?
Lose in The QF?
Cool observations man. Eventhough not plausible. Well done.
stranger things happen in life . So donot count on ” not plausible thing”

Hey Prem,
Would like to know your stance on the link below as it involves your name (not in the perspective i would’ve ever thought).
http://cricketingview.blogspot.com/2011/03/on-cricket-fans.html#more
Looks from the current scenario we will meet pak in the qf and if we cross them (we should if we look at the quality of the group A teams) we will most likely meet australia in the semis and if we cross them :X meet SA again in the final – we can take the revenge then
Is M S Dhoni’s captaincy grossly over rated? Is he lucky to Captain a side that has some great players who shoulder the responsibility irrespective of what happens? Some of his decisions are quite baffling. Bowl Nehra in the last over when he is still not match fit can be seriously questioned. More so when Harbhajan was available and bowling well, and would have been handy against a left handed tail ender. Or is it that Bhajji was reluctant to bowl the last over, as he was in the T 20 World Cup final that India won? Taking the batting powerplay was also a risk that could have been avoided, despite SRT wanting it. India were motoring along comfortably at 6-6.5 an over, and another 7 overs would have taken us above 310, a safe enough total, when the powerplay 3 could have been taken. We took too many risks when it was not required and paid the price. Selecting Chawla over Aswin, banishing Sreesanth after one game ( true he bowled badly but at least he bowled some good balls too, but by the same logic Chawla should have been kicked out long ago, for he has hardly bowled a tight over in the series so far, and will MSD banish Nehra, after his disastrous last over in Nagpur?) and tinkering with the batting order unnecessarily have upset the team. Also, his field placings have been very unimaginative. There are far too many easy singles to be had. We just have a Plan A – batting out other teams, without any back up plans. And now the Plan A is clearly not working. I dont see us going beyond the Semi final.
I would agree that Indian performance so far has not been that inspiring. But I will not write them off. Reason is that none of the other teams too has looked good (except probably Australia, but they are not tested so far by any strong performance from other teams). Its weird, but all the teams have shown their own struggles at one time or another. South Africa looks the most formidable, yet they went down against England (also, if Indians had played at least badly, scoring 75 runs in the last 15 overs with 9 wickets in hand, not catastropically, like 29 for 9, SA would now have been in a position to be out of the competition). With none of the teams look convincing for a 3 match sequence of victories, and since one team will end up doing it anyway, I would give India also to a chance to do it.
Yes this is a evenly contested worldcup but unfortunately, the eveness is because most of the teams have a number of weaknesses instead of the other way around. I think we have a chance.
This looks like a world cup that will be decided more by who plays less badly than by who plays better. And that is a pity.
Guess most people didnt notice or evaded the reality: Thursday’s QF between India and Australia will most probably be the LAST ODI played by one of the two legends of the recent Cricket history – Sachin or Ponting.
I just hope it is not Sachin’s last.
I think the best strategy for India is to chase targets like the Srilankans of 1996.
Prem’s hometown Calicut is famous for the honesty and integrity of Autorickshaw drivers. They go by the meter (not tampered) and never overcharge. A Tamil Nadu minister was so impressed he requested his Kerala counterpart and sent a delegation of Chennai Auto Drivers (who has a ‘great’ reputation) to learn from the Caliculwallahs. After the first day, the TN Minister got a frantic call from his counterpart from Kerala begging him to ask the delegration to go back to Chennai. It seems the Chennai Drivers, instead of learning ethics, were teaching the Calicut drivers a thing or two about fleecing passengers.
I was reminded of this story when I read this article
http://www.indianexpress.com/news/oz-cricketers-seek-massive-pay-hike-ca-angered/768272/
And they had just returned from India!!!!
Team news for the Ind-pak match is that AN and YP will get a look. YP in place of Ashwin? You can not win matches by playing all batsmen then every team would have done the same requiring any strategy. MSD seem to have forgotten that wicket-taking bowlers required to apply pressure.
AN for MP?
Just rewind your tape.. Few years back Ind-pak match in Delhi (don’t remember which cup it was). Mushraff then the Pak president was invited for the match. AN opened the bowling and lost the match in the first over itself. Dished out half volleys, leg side short pitch deliveries and Afridi murdered him. Then the rumor was that AN was involved in match fixing and it turned out that he had visited Pakistan few months before and met Afridi and Aktar personally. AN was dumped after that and it took few years and strong performance in the IPL to make a comeback to the team. So now we are playing him again? Afridi should open for Pak.. Good luck guys.
I dont see YP coming in but AN may be – I was hoping it would be Sreesanth since oflate Nehra is so out of wack and so out of energy it really doesnt do the team any good (atleast that is what I saw). Munaf acts more like zombie on the field so it is good to get rid of him but… may be they are looking for a like for like exhange?
India won a good match and being 1 win away from becoming champions.
All kudos to the team, hope the captain is not hyped up after the win.The team is doing well inspite of MSD.It is the seniors who have shown the way SRT,VS,ZAK,Yuvi, wasn’t this the WC where the young legs and turks were supposed to have stolen the show?Where are the Kohlis,YPs?Probably they are waiting for the final. The best should continue to play inspite of age.
All the other teams did look weak though-except for Sri Lanka who appear full strength.Like someone mentioned this WC was all about who played less bad.
Good Luck India
You can’t say “inspite of MSD”. He might have errored here and there, but overall he was not an underperforming captain. I assume you are not talking about his batting.
While we did a professional job in the Semi Final is beating Pakistan (with considerable help from the oily fingers of Pakistan fielders, harakiri by a few batsmen and our 12th man playing for Pakistan -Misbah who ensured we won, as he did in the T 20 final), there indeed was a little ungracious act by the Indians. While Afridi praised the Indians and wished them luck, neither MSD nor SRT cared to speak one good word about the Pakistanis in their post match presentation interaction with Ravi Sashtri. Pakistan had a great run in the tournament, inspite of all the problems of spot fixing and not having a home game for 2 years now, and the Semi Final was played without acrimony. One would have thought both MSD and SRT were a little less self centred. I have never been a great fan of Afridi, but he led the team well, kept his cool even when catches were dropped, and was magnanimous in defeat, and never blamed any of his team mates for the defeat. In fact he praised his team for the good showing and apologized to the nation for letting them down. He showed lot of character.
How many times have you seen a winning captain wishing the losing captain “best of luck”? Did you see Vettori doing that to Smith? Did you see Sanga doing that to Vettori or Strauss? Did you see Dhoni doing that to Ponting? OK, did you see Afridi doing that to Samy? Jeezzzz…
Others being boorish doesnt mean that we have to be too!!!!
We have seen tennis players do acknoledge the loser with grace during presentation ceremonies. Going by your argument, Afridi need not have wished India good luck too. He could have just kept quiet. MSD didnt and that was in poor taste, irrespective of whether others did or not. And it is not a question of saying ‘Best of luck’. It could be simple as just mentioning that Pakistan did play a good game. It has been done before. I have heard Kumble acknowledge the opposition in post match presentations when he was captain.
From the Indian side AN showed his large heart to the Pakistanis. First he did not claim the catch of friend Afridi. In fact it was a clean catch. Check the videos again. Closer than what one thought initially. Even his backside of the finger got hurt because it was under the ball and hurt due to the impact. If it was a ground catch then his nail part of the finger would have got damaged. These third umpire’s generally go by what commentators say (if you guys think that TV in the umpire room is muted.it is not).in this case the catcher himself was not keen and given up .
So why would anyone bother..
During post match handshake AN gave a warm hug to Afridi and Aktar ..While rest of the India team was very professional. That’s good enough from the Indian side one thought!
Much has been written about how Bhajji raised his game in the semi final by taking two crucial wickets. But if you look back, both the wicket were a little fortuitous. Umar Akmal’s wicket came the first ball after a break, when the break had upset his rhythm – still I would grant Bhajji did bowl a good ball. But the wicket of Afridi was through a full toss!!! Bhajji frankly came second best by a long way when compared to Saeed Ajmal, who made life hell for someone as classy as Sachin, beating him in the air and off the wicket.
Irrespective of what happens in the final, we do need to make a call on many players. We need to groom the next set of medium pacers, as Nehra and even Zaheer may not be around for the next world cup. Ashwin and Ojha should take over the spin department from Bhajji, who has really let us down over the past year or so. We need our spinners to be an attacking option. Sachin might play less and less ODI, if at all he plays ODI post World Cup, which I doubt. Yuvis body may not hold together till the next world cup. It is time to give a look into to Manish Pandey, Ambati Rayudu, perhaps the most talented of the younger lot.
India-Srilanka : Another match ( save me, omg)
These two sides have played atleast a million times in the last 2 years. Time has come to ban both and have a Pakistan -Newzealand final. If it is not acceptable, then handover the cup to both India and Srilanka without playing the match (saving the people from one more torture)
It will be veery sad if srilanka wins. They are a team of dodgy cheating action bowlers
Come on man…dont compare some “any” India-SL match with a world cup final. One side of the spectrum consists of people who arrange series after series between two countries. You seems to belong to the other spectrum- who cannot find a context for any game….
Buddy I am not alone. Just see this link

Mate, did you fail to see that it was a attempt at comedy? People try to caricature things (even i thought first, bloody Ind vs SL…), but don’t take it seriously. BTW, if you were also just trying to find humour, forgive me, but it didn’t strike me like that….
It seems SL plan to Spin a web around the Indian batsmen. IMO India needs to play Ashwin not SS in the final. Not able to understand MSD’s mental block with Ashwin . YS looked very ordinary in the pressure match ..it’s too much to ask from a part time bowler in the WC final.
Sehwag has been wasting the reviews .
Diving intervention – I wanted Dhoni to lose the toss so that India will chase and win – I feel so assured when we are chasing
I didn’t feel it was a tricky chase even at 30/(sehwag and sachin).
http://www.mumbaimirror.com/article/59/2011040520110405050000856dd983dd6/Amarnath-could-be-interim-coach-for-the-Windies-tour.html
Amarnath,Flower,Fletcher.. Strange choices for the next coach of India
Why not Shane Warne? Admitted he wont be as low profile as Gary Kirsten, but the guy is a genius and has one of the best cricketing brains. He also doesnt believe in over coaching. Indian team will certainly go through a transition period in a year or two with Sachin, Dravid and VVS making way ultimately, and who better than Shane Warne to motivate a bunch of young talent. Admitted that his personal life style might warrant some unwanted headlines, but Warne is a class act and could take our team to the next level. And he might make a difference to our woeful bowling.
All said and done, I think our bowling did reasonably well in this world cup in the last stages. So, not “woeful”. I agree we do not have impact bowlers who can turn around a game in five minutes. But bowling is not all about that, is it? SL had one of the best impact bowlers in the world -Malinga- at their disposal in the final, and he did the damage in the beginning, yet he and his team were worked around, right? I don’t think a coach can produce impact bowlers. They are almost born that way. I don’t have any problem bringing in Warne, but it should not be with the expectation that he is going to produce some magic in the bowling department. Nobody can do that. As Dhoni and Kirsten did, we can just work with whatever we have.
There are reports that many of the regulars want to opt out of the WI One day series and Yuvi might lead the team.
This could be a good occasion to include Dravid in the squad along with th many youngsters and have him formally retire from ODIs,this could be a fitting farewell for one of India’s Loyal cricketing servants.
Prem,
Where r u? U promised to post one per working day. Its been about 2 months without a single post. Need to read your posts along with morning coffee to get going in this close to boring job.
Is IPL4 using D/L method or VJD method for truncated matches? Everywhere it is mentioned as D/L whereas BCCI wanted to trial the VJD method
